License Requirements

If you want to become a dental hygienist in Michigan, you will have to meet the following requirements to earn your license:

  • As with any state, Michigan requires that you to complete an accredited dental hygiene program and graduate.
  • You must take and pass the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination.
  • You must also take and pass the regional examination offered by the Commission on Dental Competency Assessments (CDCA).
  • You need a CPR license in order to obtain a license to practice dental hygiene.
  • There are no temporary, teacher, or retired/inactive licenses available in the state of Michigan.
  • Two years of practice are required.
  • You will need your official high school and college transcripts, as well as letters of recommendation from dentists practicing in Michigan. Additionally, you will need official letters from the boards of dentistry in the state.
  • You will need to take and pass a jurisprudence exam, proving you know the letter of the law.
